The outbuilding in our garden

Following my previous post about orangeries, and because some of my readers were interested in the evolution of the outbuilding we started to build the previous year, I decided to give you a glimpse into our garden. I have to say that we started to the garden landscaping in october the passed year, so we (especially my skilful husband!) had done a lot of work the previous weeks and we have to do a lot of work in the coming weeks!!

Honestly, I was planning to show you some pictures of the building within a few weeks, when I would have been ready with the finishing touch of the decoration, but because of the demand of my readers, I couldn’t resist to post a few pictures of how it looks at this moment.

I promise you to post more pictures within a few weeks where you also will see the evolution in our garden.

For those of you who haven’t read my earlier posts about our outbuilding, you can go to see it here, here and here.

Maybe you will remember these pictures of last summer.

1

The start in July 2009 !

3  My husband is preparing the roof , ready to be thatched.

4

The thatching is going on (September 2009).

5

The outbuilding as it is today.

8 The planters will need a beautiful tree, maybe an old olive tree??

2Do you remember the oak table that Jan made for me?

14

Here she is!!!

The oak is beautifuly weathered, because the table has wintered outside.

16 An old sink of Belgian bluestone.

7

Within a few weeks when the weather is better, I will put the cushions in the chairs (show you pictures of it later).

15

For the lanterns I was inspired by…

21 …this image I found at Côte Maison,

And for the wicker chairs I was inspired by…

this image in Veranda.

The following pictures are all of the gardening we did the passed weeks.

9 You see that everywhere we have to put flowers and plants now!!

13

12

This very old boxwood plant was coming over last week from my mother’s garden! I hope this old lady (?) will enjoy living with us now!

19 The hydrangeas and the oleander are ready for summer!

18

And this last picture I posted especially for my neighbours Marie-Jeanne and Serge, who are helping us wherever they can with some good advice to gardening! This is their horse, named Carol, and she is grazing in the grazing land next to our home!

She is my favorite!!!

Well my friends , if you are wondering why there maybe are lacking a few posts of me in the coming weeks… you will understand… I will be gardening!!!!

xx

Greet

  1. Greet,
Quel beau travail cette maison en bois pour les dîners dehors !
J'aime beaucoup aussi la maison en briques, tout est impeccable.
Espérons en effet que le vieux buis se plaira...
    Bonne soirée,

  15. Hello my friend,
I remember that building, it is gorgeous!!! I love it, it's the look people over here are going for now. You have done an amazing job on it. That is such a wonderful roof. My daughter Carolyn lives in a small dutch settlement in Washington state and there is a lovely little house with a thatched roof on it right next to a public park. The walking path goes right along side of it. It is so sweet, like your building here is.

  19. Absolutely love your table (and everything else, esp. the thatched roof!). May I ask, who is Jan? Does he make tables for export to the USA? All the trestle tables I've looked at are too large for my space. Any information would be most helpful. Thank you.

  22. Hello Greet,
The 'outhouse' is absolutely gorgeous. Of course we use the term "outhouse" for something else here in California. We would probably refer to this lovely building as a "Lanai". I should send you a picture of our lanai. My architect husband built it for us also. We are very lucky to have these talented husbands Greet. I love the thatched roof! Thanks for sharing your lovely home.

  23. Hoi Greet!

Thank you so much for taking me up on my request yesterday and posting the beautiful photographs of your outside room, it'sstunning. When/if we move back to Antwerp, I would love to install such a building in our garden, although we have a "room" attached to the back of our home, which I have been thinking of installing a fireplace and a tiled roof. Thank you so much for the inspiration, I love the table that your husband made plus the huge wooden planters, I agree, olives would be right at home placed in them.

Looking forward to seeing the "room" in the warmer weather, that's if it ever comes!

  25. To my anonymous reader
The table is made by my husband Jan. But maybe our blogger friend Veronique of www.malvini.com
can help you with a trestle table. I know she does export to the US.

  26. Greet it's gorgeous! The wood makes my heart sing. We don't have wood structures like that here in Provence and though I love our stone, I do miss the warmth (and smell) of beautiful wood.

  30. I can't wait to show these wonderful photos to my husband (who is from Belgium) I run the risk that he may want to move back. Greet, you have done an outstanding job on your home and garden. Truly, it should be featured in a European magazine. Everything you do is an inspiration and truly unique.

  31. Greet it all looks amazing! I love the structure of the outbuilding and the traditional roof. It will age beautifully.

I think your idea of an old olive tree is fantastic. Would add so much character and movement. Lovely!

  41. The L-shaped outbuilding is lovely, cozying up your yard. The thatch gives an old-world softness, and the weathered table is fabulous. I think your husband could go to work for Restoration Hardware, if he gets bored with his day-job. Your posts make me want to visit Belgium. I have loved everything from your country since my sister and I bought our handmade Belgium-lace wedding veils there too many years ago to mention! By the way, I'd welcome a visit by you to my new blog: http://graciousinteriors.blogspot.com! I'm trying to drum up readers!

  42. Greet, Everything about this is just wonderful. I love every detail. We have just started working with a dear friend and client on a new home in the country. There is an "outbuilding" as you call it already on the property that has a lot of charm. I can't wait to show her these images. This will make her so excited about the potential that is already there. I am also looking forward to seeing your finished project. It just can't get much better than this. What a lovely, lovely home.

  63. Greet, thank you for stopping by my blog and your kind words.

I am still curious about the wood for your outbuilding... I guess our white oak here is the states would be the closest to your oak. Is your oak treated for exterior use? I love the grayed tones of the wood... is that a natural weathering or a wash/stain? It looks so great!
