Wing chairs, the choice is yours…

I have always loved wingchairs. Fabric or leather upholstered, slipcovered, I love them all.

Placed next to the fire place, at your desk or mixed with chairs around your dining table, there always is a suitable place for a wing chair.

A wing chair (also, wing-back chair or wing-back) is an easy chair or club chair with "wings" mounted to the back of the chair typically but not always stretching down to the arm rest. The purpose of which was to enclose the head or torso areas of the body in order to provide comfortable protection from drafts, and to trap the heat from a fireplace in the area where the person would be sitting. Hence, in historic times these are often used near a fireplace. Currently most examples of wing chairs are fully upholstered with exposed wood legs, but, many of the oldest wing chair examples have an exposed frame with padded cushions at the seat, arm rests, back and sometimes wings.

Though there are many types of wing chairs there are two standard wing styles - the flat wing and the scroll wing. There are also bat wings and butterfly wings just to name a few. The length, depth, vertical position and shape of the wings may vary from chair to chair. (Text wikipedia)

  3. Hello Greet,

I have always loved the tradition of Wing Back Chairs and inspiring to see them used more in a contemporary scheme too. My late father had a beautiful antique, pale green velvet upholstered one which he always sat in - to me the style has always reminded me of him - strong, traditional, warm and comfortable.

    2. Greet,

  6. This is a fantastic selection of armchairs! From classics to more modern ones.

The Ralph Lauren Home one is my favourite. I would also had some BRABBU armchairs to this collection.

    Thanks for posting!

  8. Happy, happy new week to you sweet friend,

I am a total wingback chair nut and have 3 sitting in the garage that are in need of some makeovers. Perhaps I need a bigger house..!

I see that your previous post was about Busy, Busy! I know the feeling. I am working like mad on a design project. When hubby comes home at 6 I will still be in my PJ's!

  9. Interesting that half of them have tight seats and the others have cushions. I have always had them with the cushions, but it could be the tight seats are more firm and comfortable! I had an "elephant ears" chair from my mother and I had to leave it behind on a move. I was heartbroken! Lovely Monday!

  12. You really got me with these images, Greet. Think I am very much a wing back chair fan. Bergeres and day beds seem a bit sophisticated for me. Thank you so much for sharing so much of what I love. (Don' you love Annie Kelly's Litchfield book!)

  17. I'm with you, dear Greet, I have always loved wing back chairs, so when I was in a position to buy new chairs, there was no doubt that I would pick wing backs. I love mine, they aren't particularly comfortable, though, I do have to say...but I love them, nevertheless! Now that I've slipcovered them, they are here to stay, I think.
Have a wonderful week, my friend.
    hugs, Cindy

  22. Hello Greet.
I love the style of wing back chairs. They fit into a contemporary or traditional setting.
I'm just about to get one of ours re-covered, after a little puppy decided the arm would taste nice!!
Hope you have a lovely week,

  24. Greet!
I LOVE wing chairs,,,have 2 of my own but they do not match which I like. One is the more traditional style and the other is French with a squared off shape on top in wood. I'm looking to reupholster them soon. I cannot wait to see the lovely paneling you will do in your living room. Everything you do is lovely and I know the finished room will be just that!

  27. I place a wing chair in almost every project, and a few in my own house. Wether traditional, funky or contemporary, a wing chair offers an intimate spot to relax or read.
