Red painted

This week I was preparing the design of an eat-in kitchen for a client, and I am thinking about painting some of the kitchen cabinets in red! Yes red!

I noticed that more and more designers are using red to paint cabinets or paneling.

These images of red painted paneling and cabinets inspired me and persuade me to give red a try in this new kitchen design.

Although this is a red painted dining room, the cabinetry inspired me to bring in red in the kitchen design.

I would love to suggest a cabinetry kitchen wall as this one here.

Here is used Farrow & Ball Rectory Red, that is echoed in the wallpaper.

And again, another shade of red!

This door inspired me to even paint the kitchen inner door in red! Why not?!

Even if I don’t succeed to convince my client to paint the exterior of the cabinets in red, I definitely will try to give the boarded interior of the cabinetry a shade of red!

The only thing I have to decide now, is to make a choice out of the different shades of red!

Here are some of the Farrow & Ball reds I love.

It’s very interesting to know that on the Farrow & Ball website, you can find some color schemes as here for the Rectory Red paint.

Would you dare to paint your kitchen cabinetry red? Please, tell me!

Happy weekend!

  1. Bold idea and bold color! I LOVE it!!! Sally used a beautiful dark red wallpaper (almost a claret red) in a dining room recently and the room feels so warm and intimate! I hope your client falls in love with your suggestion!

    Cheers,

  2. Greet,

I love red as a strong burst of color. I like the idea of you presenting it to your client. The exact shade will have a huge impact and boost business.

I would use it in my home for inside an armoire, pantry doors, or inside a closet because the hue represents an inner space.

As for a public space it works to balance energy as I feel most public spaces can be draining. Sounds like a great project your clients are lucky to work with you.

  3. Flamant's Rouge Castille wallpaper has my eye right now. I may not do red cupboards, but I had a cranberry wallpaper that I loved for several years before switching to a very light bisque wallpaper. I'm ready to go bold and deep again, purple or red. The warmth of a deep red is wonderful for summer, autumn, winter, and holidays, when you do most of your cooking and indoor entertaining. In decorating & tabletop dinnerware, it goes well with warm autumn colors or pairs equally well with clean, white dishes in snowy winter and hot summer. Red is vibrant and strong, yet warm and inviting. . .and it's a bit of a surprise. I'm ready.

  4. I've painted my kitchen walls red in several homes, but never the cabinetry. Walls are easier to redo when I tired of it.

  7. I love red as an accent color. In my kitchen here in France I have a glass backsplash that is red and I brought my red leather bar stools from the U.S. Although I love Farrow & Ball paint [Dimity in the kitchen, Matchstick in the living room, White Tie in bathrooms], I don't think they do a brilliant job with the reds. They seem just a bit too muddy for my taste when I'm thinking of a proper red. But to your point of cabinets painted red, I'd say yes. I like the combination of natural or stained wood for base cabinets and upper cabinets in a contrast.

  8. I've seen a number of paneled rooms- which take up quite a lot of space, painted a single uniform color, making them almost no-color. My aunt painted all the woodwork in her large living room a teal-water blue that matched the water of the large river just outside as seen in the window from that room. it was stunning. FB has the most amazing colors, but i'd have to hold chips in my hand in the actual room to make a decision.

  9. LOVE the red cabinets. We are still debating on if we will paint our kitchen island red or black. After seeing the kitchen above the red seems to be winning again.

  10. red is not for me but these examples are glorious. i think i prefer the warmth of the blazer hue above. my parents love using red (so nordic!) on furniture and cabinetry, and it always comes off as very cheerful.

    smiles to you, greet.

  15. Hi Greet,
I'm so thinking of painting my cabinets, but know it's forever. Cannot go back to a wood look after paint except with extensive stripping. So, I keep only looking at painted cabinets. I am thinking of black with much of the black rubbed off, or greige with much of the paint rubbed off. So far, I am only thinking and looking for inspiration. Thanks for giving some today.

  16. Greet, do you think that designers are warming to red in reaction to the cool greys that dominate decor these days? I painted my family room Renoir Red 15 years ago, and I still love it. Best wishes.

  17. Greet- Don't think I can be so bold to paint cabinets in red- BUT you made me consider it - you and the not-allth-bold looking images!

  20. Greet,
I have used red for cabinets and loved it. the lower cabinets were painted red–them a glaze was added.

The upper shelving was open and painted the same color as the walls–a creamy white. I hope your client goes for the red.

  21. Hi Greet,
I was also contemplating red for the cabinets, a very deep ruby red, but in the end opted for dark grey in combination with very light yellowish-green and used the ruby red only for decorations and accessories. As the kitchen is not a very light room and also not extremely large I thought the red would be too overwhelming. I suppose, however, your client's premises will be both spacious and light, so you don't need to consider these factors too much.
Good luck and thank you for a great Belgian style blog in English!!

  22. As I browsed into some older issues of magazines and some of the interior design books which I hadn’t taken of our library shelves since a long time, I came across some beautiful and inspirational images. Sección Amarilla
