Is white the next big color trend in interior design?

According to the famous interior designer Timothy Corrigan, the color white will be the new color trend in interior design for the next coming months.

Visiting Maison & Objet, the big design trade fair in Paris this month, Timothy spotted new launches and new trends and concluded that the color white was seen at the booths of a lot of the world’s leading furniture and design manufacturers. Timothy tells us that the most significant trend he spotted was the bold move away from multi-colored, almost rainbow splash of the last couple of years to the ubiquitous use of white.

‘White is everywhere!’, he explains. ‘Furniture, accessories, carpets, lighting,….’

‘What’s interesting to note’, says Timothy, ‘is that you can do some pretty outrageous design concepts but they somehow seem more accessible when they are pitched up all in white.’

According to Timothy we can expect to see a lot of white in catalogues and home stores starting this winter and extending into spring.

With permission of Timothy I posted some of the pictures he took at Maison & Objet which all confirm his conclusion that the color white was indeed omnipresent.

I would love to thank Timothy Corrigan for sharing with us his thoughts about new trends he observed at Maison & Objet.

And a huge thank you to Timothy’s assistant Elaine Maltzman, who is always so kind to share with me the latest news about Timothy’s design work, as she did now by sending me usefull pictures and information.

I have always been a huge fan of Timothy’s work and for my readers who are not familiar with his design, please visit Timothy’s website at http://www.timothy-corrigan.com, you will not regret it.

White is color at its most complete and pure, the color of perfection.

White is purity, innocence, wholeness and completion.

White is a color of protection and encouragement, offering a sense of peace and calm.

White is the color of new beginnings, it is the blank canvas waiting to be written upon.

Presumed one of my clients asks me to decorate their home in the new trend using white! What would I suggest?

I was curious about the use of white as new color trend and started browsing the web and tried to search for examples of using white in a future client’s project.

These are examples of how I would love to see bringing in the color white into a home.

What do you think about this white painted attic room? Ceiling, walls and floor painted in white! Even if you don’t want to follow color trends, this room will always be beautiful. White is a wonderful base.No matter which colors you want to bring in afterwards.

  3. I did see a lot of white at the shows, but also more brights than I have ever noticed before. I absorbed a different take, where interiors were vibrant, eclectic, interesting. I am one who has only been using whites and natural for years, to jump in now in a myriad of well selected colors. I had dinner in Paris with Timothy Corrigan during Maisons et objets, and not only is he immensely talented, but such fun and entertaining. I cannot wait to see his book when it comes out next year about his french chateau.

  5. Like you said I would use white as a background color but I could never live in an all white room, seems almost to stark to me. Interesting to see that white is a favored color rather then a true color. Thank you for sharing and I love Timothy's work as well.

    Enjoy your week!

    Lieve groet, Ingrid

  12. I love white and have been using it in my home for the past 20 years. To break up the white, I often use colored pillows and lots of textures such as sisal rugs, baskets, etc. White will always be my favorite color.

  14. When I was young, I liked colors. The more I aged, the more I began to love all white. Well, now that I am old, I really LOVE it. I do like seasonal pops of color with it, Robin's Egg blue in spring, coral in summer, then turquoise and finally silver and gray for winter (sometimes with an additional pop of magenta for the holidays).

  15. Pretty rooms! Our winters are so long that our white walls were switched out several years ago to warmer tones to warm up the rooms. We choose darker wood for the kitchen too, much cozier for us. I will never tire of gazing at white interiors and white kitchens though . Will hopefully be able to use whites in a beach cottage one day.

  16. I love the freshness of white, but I am surprised that you call it a new trend. It has been the 'in thing' in Australia for the past decade and numerous interior decorating books have been written about the 'All white house'. The Swedish Gustavian look has been very popular in the UK for years too. It favours white painted wood and lime washed floors. I love using white like 'Summer for Swede collection' using pops of blue, turquoise, coral and gray. Thanks for introducing me to the work of Timothy Corrigan.

  18. So very very difficult to actually "live" in a white room or house, even though they are beautiful. I agree with Francine on this. She has the most refined eye for the latest, sleekest, happening interiors I've ever seen. I don't like dark wood interiors at all, and was so happy to see the white wood headboard painted up like that. (My daughter-in-law has this same piece on the ceiling of their master bedroom, still in wood finish). See you next Tuesday for "By Invitation Only" hopefully, Greet?

  19. All these spaces are gorgeous. I LOVE white. I have A LOT of white in my house. The Whitest space I have is our Kitchen. I am very excited to see this as a trend. I would love to have more white furniture but with a young son it is not very child friendly. Thanks for a lovely and informative post Greet.
    Have a great week. Jx

  23. Greet,
I do love white but each time I have used it in a room, I've come to realize I need a little more weight that comes with some rich color. I'm not sad to see the rainbow, bold colors leave the magazines and rooms I view, but some amount of color with either wood furnishings or accents are always a timeless look (for me). Fun food for design thought, thank you.

  26. Love all this white serenity, but practicality tells me it is only for my white fantasy house. Too many spots would appear mysteriously and the serenity would be gone. But, Greet, I so love looking at it (just not living with it).

  27. Beautiful images, Greet! I am so torn between the love of white and all neutrals or tons of color! I have both in my home, as if I really don't know which way to go! I feel like time will tell.
    Take care.

  28. Hello dear Greet,
A very interesting read, I love the looks of white, with a bit of orange or black to break it up, I love the room that Axel Vervoordt did, all white there is gorgeous with the texture in the ceiling beams and wood furniture. Doing an all white room is tricky, I don't think I could do it well. I know you could, though. Thanks for the very informative post.
Have a good week, hugs, Cindy
