Reading or dining?

As it is weekend and very cold outside, what is more cozier than reading a good book or dining with your family?!

Why not choosing for your library to have dinner or choosing for your dining room to read a good book?

To have dinner surrounded by books ! Isn’t that a wonderful idea ?

  1. Beautiful and inspirational as always Greet! We are going to go out, with camera in hand, to take some beautiful photographs in Brasschaat Park, the snow is powdery, the sun is shining and the sky is blue, perfect, then home for some comfort food I think. Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the snow. x

  2. I forgot to add that I bought a beautiful book called Quiet Living, Unique Country Interiors by Piet Swimberghe, just in case you haven't seen it. x

  4. Greet....love the idea of bookcases in a dining room, started seeing much more of that in recent years and what a marvelous idea! It adds instant coziness and warmth to a room that rarely gets used and invites you in more often....so many gorgeous rooms!

  5. Oh dahhling I am obsessed with this post! I have been working on designing a petit library of my own for the last month & already have a dining table in it, but the 5th image is simply sublime! Very inspirational....

  6. I'm hearing how dreadfully cold it is in Europe just now, and completely understand the need for these interiors. Why go outside when it's so warm & cozy inside. I love long tablecloths to the floor, but most men seem to have a problem with their feet getting in the way, don't they? Just beautiful, Greet.

  7. Oh how fabulous. I am enchanted with the idea of books all around! I tend to keep them hidden, but maybe I should bring out a few of the older ones! See Greet? You inspire. Anita

  10. Greet - I LOVE this idea... I have used it with a couple of clients but really try to find more applications for it because it IS the most lovely and warm of dining rooms! Thank you so much for sharing... have a wonderful weekend.

  11. Beautiful, emotional and wonderfully romantic images. I'm drawn to the ones that are not quite symmetrical, less formal. I do so love that mirrors, candles and linen table clothes. Bunny Williams is brilliant. I've been poking around her website and books for inspirational ideas for a Show House proposal Sally and I are working on. If you were stateside, we'd be begging you to help with a little trim and paneling. :-)

    Cheers,
    John

  13. Greet,
Have you been reading my mind lately?

You and Bunny have inspired me to move forward on this.

If only I could have your master work here in Lexington.

Get those fire places roaring and stay warm!

  15. It was Darryl Carter, a local interior designer and author of The New Traditional that first got me thinking about changing my rarely used dining room into a cozy library lounge for my excessively growing collection of books. Although I never did, your photos have me re-thinking the better idea of a dual purpose reading dining room...a reaDine room! Love it!

  16. Since formal dining rooms are often underused I like designing this room to have more than one function, and often combining it with a library is the perfect solution. Books add a richness and also serve a practical function, as it can be the perfect space for studying given a large table.

Thank you for sharing some great examples Greet.

    Cheers,

    Claudia

  19. I always find such great inspiration here...sorry that I have been away so long. I came out of the holiday season and was immediately faced with family health problems...but my dad got a pacemaker for his heart last week and he is now good as new. So back to business and getting around to all my blogging friends. I do hope that your back has mended and by the time the weather turns warm you will be back on your horse again. Love the dining room library combination...books add instant atmosphere to any setting and for those of us who do not have large homes it is the perfect way to have a room do double duty. Hope you are enjoying a relaxing weekend. All the best, Jermaine

  20. You always find the most beautiful images!
I think a library/dining room is the perfect idea. Dining rooms get used so infrequently. It seems a shame not to put them to good use.
Although we won't have a formal dining room at Patina Farm, we do plan to keep stacks of books on our farm table with plenty of bookshelves near by.
    Thank you for the inspiration.
    Happy weekend.

  22. Brooke beat me to it! I was going to say the exact same thing--I don't know how you do it Greet but you always have the very best images. I have always wanted to have a library/dining room and we would have done so in our current apartment save that we love our big monastery table and it simply wouldn't fit in our petite salon! Next house. :)

    Bon Dimanche! Bisous,
    Heather

  23. All these images are beautiful, Greet. I especially love the last one because I had a cloudy sky painted on the ceiling of my dining room in the home I recently sold. It was done by an artist friend of mine and made the room glorious. The sad thing is I could not take it with me. I have a more "open plan" home here in Florida and no longer have a formal dining room, but several dining areas both inside and out. However, I do have a library. Now I am thinking it could be another place to dine. Thanks for the inspiration.
    All the best...Victoria

  24. We use our dining room everyday for homework and to use the computer. It is nice because it is far enough from the television, yet you can be available for the kids from the kitchen. We are currently redoing it giving it warm colors. The new trendy white is just to sensitive to kids activities, not to mention food stains from dinner parties.-Ann

  28. Hello my friend, Has the snow been falling in your part of the world? It snowed in Rome, I saw on one bloggers post tonight, the first snowfall in many years, if I read it correctly.
I love the looks of a dining room/library combined. It has such a warm comfortable, cozy atmosphere, doesn't it. I love the images that you found for this post, they are all exactly right. They are all my favorites today!
    Love and hugs, Cindy
