Steel windows and doors

More and more architects are integrating steel windows and doors in their designs. The advantage of using steel windows and doors is, that it ables designers to create slim profiles and frames to achieve the right proportions.

Steel windows allow a room to be filled with the maximum amount of light and is creating a closer connection with the exterior or the garden.

The combination of steel windows and wooden doors, or vice versa, is wonderful.

The images here will illusrate this.

Love this door!

Steel windows are very comfortable to use in an orangery or in a conservatory. They allow the maximum amount of light to come in and create an indoor/outdoor feeling.

If you don’t dare to bring in a big steel window, try a small one as this! Charming isn’t it?

    Fijne week gewenst,
    groet Petra

  13. You are right, these windows are beautiful and I love the industrial look combined with a more elegant or rustic decor. I also had a post on Lofts with images of windows, aluminum in this case, painted like wrought iron. The picture taken by you is great, the use of light perfect!

  14. Greet,

This post is fabulous and as usual, does not disappoint. I absolutely adore the look of using steel windows, but sadly here in America they are not used very much due to rising cost of the material and installation. However, to emulate the look, I have painted wood windows with true divided light in very rich brown tones and blac/brown tones. Not the same, but the effect is nice.

Have a great week and thank you again for always posting such wonderful insight into European Design.

  17. Love these huge windows though what struck me most is the brick flooring in picture. Of course I've seen brick floors but never one like this one with the sides of the brick showing. I love it!

Hope you had a wonderful weekend, Greet!

  18. I love the look of high end metal windows...thinking of replacing my front doors and back French doors and windows with bronze. For many years, I shied away from metal windows or doors because we had a horrible design thing (mostly to save $)going on here in the US with aluminum windows. They were/are dreadfully ugly with no architectural merit at all. Windows are such an important element that I believe it well worth the investment to go for the best. Thanks for inspiring us with these images.

We love steel windows and try to use them in our projects when ever the budget allows (they can get a bit pricey). We actually found a wonderful company that makes aluminum windows that look like steel. They were perfect for the beach (steel rusts within a year!). We're hoping to eventually use them at our beach house in Oxnard.
    Thank you for the inspiration!

  38. Absolutely love them. Interesting comments on some of the practical issues though. We are working with a client on a beautiful country home right now. Steel windows are absolutely not in the budget but we are going to use very narrow grids and paint the windows black for a similar look at obviously a fraction of the cost. Bobby Mcalpine has done this in the past with clients that could not afford the steel. I'll be posting pics when we are finished.

  40. I love the look of these windows and doors. I think that metal doors can be a great asset to a home for a lot of reasons, including the increase in safety and durability. However, whichever type of door you choose, I think you should first research your options. McGraw Hill's Sweets Directory of construction products and manufacturers is a great place to go before I starting any home improvement project. Not only do they offer a lot of useful information, but they also have some really great CAD details that you can download. While I do work for them, I honestly use them myself because they offer the most complete directory I have seen. They are really worth taking a look at.

  41. Just seen the comment about rusting. Of course steel windows need to be rust-proofed, this is usually achieved by galvanizing, or zinc-plating. My company, Crittall offer hot-dipped galvanizing as standard - here's why: http://tizzie.wodewick.co.uk/?p=96

  44. Indeed, these windows and doors are very classic and elegant. And homes with these kind will really look majestic because of its simple, chic and modern style.

My grandmother's doors and windows has designs like these also. Every year or two, she renovate the theme and the designs of her home and she regularly change the galavanized steel band and galvanized steel band of her doors and windows for full protection and maintenance.

  46. You gotta love 'em metal doors and windows, due to their feeling of giving you both security and beauty! As a metal and steampunk aficionado, I never let any place on the household of ours to have no metallic accessories (but, we don't want toilet paper made out of sheet metal on our bathroom.. haha!), especially on our front door with our copper alloys embellishments.

  47. When putting steel windows and doors, it should match the house. Choosing the color for the steel door should be considered. I like the combination of steel and brick, since it gives a comfortable feeling.
